Improve daemon shutdown reliability and timeout handling
SocketServer:
- Increase connection handler wait timeout from 100ms to 2s
- Increase accept loop wait timeout from 500ms to 3s
- Prevents race conditions where handlers are cancelled mid-operation

WorkCoordinator:
- Replace thread detach with extended join attempt
- Prevents use-after-free from detached threads accessing freed resources

Daemon Command:
- Increase shutdown wait timeout from 3s to 6s
- Increase default waitForDaemonStop timeout from 5s to 10s
- Allows time for graceful SocketServer shutdown

These changes address SIGABRT and SIGTERM issues during daemon shutdown
by ensuring async operations complete before resources are freed.

Cross-Version Compatibility Tests

All protocol versions are tested for:

  1. Ping Support ✅

    • All versions support the ping method for connection health checks
  2. Cancellation ✅

    • All versions support request cancellation via notifications/cancelled
  3. Progress Notifications ✅

    • All versions support progress tracking via _meta.progressToken
  4. Logging ✅

    • All versions support logging/setLevel and notifications/message

Version-Specific Tests

Protocol Version Negotiation

  • ✅ Supports all 5 claimed versions
  • ✅ Falls back to latest for unsupported versions
  • ✅ Strict mode rejects unsupported versions with proper error code (-32901)
  • ✅ Uses latest version when protocolVersion not specified

Feature Detection

Each version test verifies:

  1. Correct protocolVersion in initialize response
  2. Required capabilities present
  3. Optional capabilities handled gracefully
  4. Backward compatibility maintained

Implementation Notes

Key Implementation Details

  1. Protocol Version Storage:

    • Stored in negotiatedProtocolVersion_ member
    • Set during initialize() method
    • Used for version-specific behavior
  2. Capability Declaration:

    • All versions declare: logging, prompts, resources, tools
    • Optional capabilities checked before use
    • Graceful degradation for unsupported features
  3. Error Handling:

    • Version-specific error codes
    • Proper JSON-RPC error format
    • Descriptive error messages

Known Limitations

  1. Tasks Support: Optional in 2025-11-25, not currently implemented
  2. Completions: Optional in 2025-06-18, not currently implemented
  3. Elicitation: Optional in 2025-06-18, not currently implemented
  4. Sampling: Server-side sampling not implemented (client capability only)

Recommendations

For Users

When configuring MCP clients:

{
  "mcp": {
    "yams": {
      "type": "local",
      "command": ["yams", "serve"],
      "enabled": true,
      "protocolVersion": "2025-11-25"
    }
  }
}

For Developers

  1. Adding New Features:

    • Check protocol version in negotiatedProtocolVersion_
    • Add version-specific tests
    • Update capability declarations
  2. Version-Specific Behavior:

    if (negotiatedProtocolVersion_ >= "2025-11-25") {
        // Use new feature
    } else {
        // Fallback behavior
    }

  3. Testing:

    • Add tests to mcp_protocol_version_features_test.cpp
    • Test all claimed versions
    • Verify backward compatibility

Compliance Verification

To verify compliance:

# Run all MCP tests
./builddir/tests/catch2_mcp_submodule

# Run only protocol version tests
./builddir/tests/catch2_mcp_submodule "[mcp][protocol]"

# Run specific version tests
./builddir/tests/catch2_mcp_submodule "[mcp][protocol][2025-11-25]"

Conclusion

YAMS MCP server successfully implements all 5 claimed protocol versions with:

  • ✅ Full backward compatibility
  • ✅ Proper version negotiation
  • ✅ Core features working across all versions
  • ✅ Optional features gracefully handled
  • ✅ Comprehensive test coverage (89 tests, 793 assertions)

The implementation is compliant with the MCP specification for all claimed versions.
