From cf9e0b7e57bdb485068a75d39a3662b32997e28e Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: trvon Date: Tue, 22 Sep 2026 11:48:34 -0600 Subject: [PATCH 01/12] fix(verify): judge only the baselined findings of the rules that ran `verify --rule X` compared the fresh report against the whole baseline. Every accepted finding of every other rule was absent from the report, because those rules never ran, so verify listed them as RESOLVED - "these fixes are confirmed" for fixes nobody made. Baseline entries are now filtered to the enabled rules before comparison. An entry's rule is its `rule` field or, for a fingerprints-only baseline, the fingerprint's first `|` segment. Entries set aside are counted as `outOfScope` in JSON and named in the text summary, so the filter is visible rather than silent. --- lib/src/cli.dart | 1 + lib/src/verify.dart | 35 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++--- test/verify_test.dart | 46 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 3 files changed, 79 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-) diff --git a/lib/src/cli.dart b/lib/src/cli.dart index 9edc235..baa4ade 100644 --- a/lib/src/cli.dart +++ b/lib/src/cli.dart @@ -548,6 +548,7 @@ class VerifyCommand extends Command { final report = verifyAgainstBaseline( report: analysis.report, baseline: entries, + rules: selected.isEmpty ? null : selected, ); if (results['format'] as String == 'json') { stdout.writeln(_encode(report.toJson())); diff --git a/lib/src/verify.dart b/lib/src/verify.dart index f878320..97c7cdd 100644 --- a/lib/src/verify.dart +++ b/lib/src/verify.dart @@ -11,10 +11,16 @@ class VerificationReport { required this.resolved, required this.stillPresent, required this.newFindings, + this.outOfScope = 0, }); + /// Accepted findings of the rules that ran, i.e. the ones this report judges. final int baselineTotal; + /// Accepted findings of rules that were not run (`--rule`), so they are + /// neither resolved nor still present: nothing looked for them. + final int outOfScope; + /// Accepted findings that are no longer reported. final List resolved; @@ -28,6 +34,7 @@ class VerificationReport { Map toJson() => { 'baselineTotal': baselineTotal, + 'outOfScope': outOfScope, 'resolved': resolved.length, 'stillPresent': stillPresent.length, 'new': newFindings.length, @@ -40,6 +47,12 @@ class VerificationReport { String describe({int top = 25}) { final buffer = StringBuffer() ..writeln('baseline $baselineTotal accepted findings') + ..write( + outOfScope == 0 + ? The verify gate refused a scan only when files FAILED, and partialScanWarning named only failures, so a skipped file's accepted findings were simply absent from the fresh report - and verify listed them as RESOLVED, "these fixes are confirmed", for code nobody read. Excluded files are a normal part of a project, so they do not abort verify. Instead each accepted finding whose file was not analysed - skipped, failed, filtered out by --no-include-generated, or outside every scanned --dir - is reported as NOT SCANNED: neither resolved nor still present. allResolved (and so --expect-resolved) now requires that list to be empty too. partialScanWarning counts skipped files, so a scan with excluded files is announced as PARTIAL on stderr like one with failures. --- lib/pipe.dart | 3 +- lib/src/cli.dart | 8 ++- lib/src/index.dart | 23 +++++-- lib/src/verify.dart | 110 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++--- test/excluded_files_test.dart | 66 ++++++++++++++++++++ test/project_scan_test.dart | 18 ++++++ test/verify_test.dart | 43 +++++++++++++ 7 files changed, 255 insertions(+), 16 deletions(-) create mode 100644 test/excluded_files_test.dart diff --git a/lib/pipe.dart b/lib/pipe.dart index 114b447..1e096a5 100644 --- a/lib/pipe.dart +++ b/lib/pipe.dart @@ -70,4 +70,5 @@ export 'src/state_flow.dart' export 'src/state_flow.dart' show RiverpodGap, RiverpodModel, RiverpodProvider, RiverpodSite; export 'src/suggest.dart' show FilePlan, FixAction, WorkPlan, buildWorkPlan; -export 'src/verify.dart' show VerificationReport, verifyAgainstBaseline; +export 'src/verify.dart' + show VerificationReport, verifyAgainstBaseline, verifyAnalysis; diff --git a/lib/src/cli.dart b/lib/src/cli.dart index baa4ade..2bcaf64 100644 --- a/lib/src/cli.dart +++ b/lib/src/cli.dart @@ -545,8 +545,12 @@ class VerifyCommand extends Command { ); } - final report = verifyAgainstBaseline( - report: analysis.report, + // Files the analyzer skipped - excluded by analysis_options, or outside + // any analysis context - are a legitimate part of a project, so they do + // not abort the run. Any edit above one of those findings changed its fingerprint, so `check --baseline` re-reported an accepted finding as new and `verify` reported its entry as RESOLVED. union and owner now count as discriminating (each of those rules emits at most one finding per union or notifier), and loading-not-reset carries `catchSite`, the catch's index among the catch clauses of its enclosing member (`twoSwallowedAwaits#1`), which does not move when code outside the member does. The test that guarded this shifted only findings.first. It now shifts every finding, and a second test really inserts lines at the top of every fixture file, re-analyses, and requires the same fingerprint set. Migration: fingerprints change for emitted-not-rendered (dormant unions), notifier-field-unread, notifier-inert-consumer and loading-not-reset. Old baselines stay readable and keep working - both `check --baseline` and `verify` also match the version-1 fingerprint (`legacyFingerprint`) - but those entries stay line-sensitive until the baseline is rewritten with --write-baseline, which now writes `"version": 2`. --- lib/src/rules.dart | 134 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++---- lib/src/verify.dart | 12 +++- test/baseline_test.dart | 125 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++------ 3 files changed, 239 insertions(+), 32 deletions(-) diff --git a/lib/src/rules.dart b/lib/src/rules.dart index bc03308..2b1de95 100644 --- a/lib/src/rules.dart +++ b/lib/src/rules.dart @@ -60,7 +60,69 @@ class Finding { final bool baselined; /// Stable identity that survives line shifts, used to ratchet a baseline. + /// + /// Every rule now carries a semantic key, so `line=` is a last resort for a + /// finding with no identity at all. The guide brief, the markdown report, the suggest agent plan and both text outputs open with a one-line coverage note, which says PARTIAL whenever a discovered file was not analysed. The note lives in the brief's header, which budget trimming never touches. The "Coverage (what was actually examined)" caveats section was the first thing dropped under a tight budget, silently; when it no longer fits, a one-line pointer now says how many caveats were left out. --- lib/pipe.dart | 2 +- lib/src/analysis.dart | 72 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ lib/src/cli.dart | 2 ++ lib/src/guide.dart | 20 +++++++++++- lib/src/rules.dart | 10 ++++++ lib/src/suggest.dart | 9 ++++++ test/guide_test.dart | 19 ++++++++++- test/suggest_test.dart | 32 +++++++++++++++++++ 8 files changed, 163 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-) diff --git a/lib/pipe.dart b/lib/pipe.dart index 1e096a5..63140e4 100644 --- a/lib/pipe.dart +++ b/lib/pipe.dart @@ -1,7 +1,7 @@ /// pipe — static state-flow analysis for Dart and Flutter applications. library; -export 'src/analysis.dart' show Analyzer, FileOutcome; +export 'src/analysis.dart' show Analyzer, FileOutcome, ScanCoverage; export 'src/errors.dart' show PipeException; export 'src/guide.dart' show diff --git a/lib/src/analysis.dart b/lib/src/analysis.dart index 7553a79..ed353f7 100644 --- a/lib/src/analysis.dart +++ b/lib/src/analysis.dart @@ -35,6 +35,78 @@ class FileOutcome { List get diagnostics => unit?.diagnostics ?? const []; } +/// How much of a project an analysis actually examined. +/// +/// Every report carries this, because a finding count means nothing without it: +/// "0 findings" from 3 of 40 files is not a clean project, and a reader (or an +/// agent) handed only the findings cannot tell. +class ScanCoverage { + const ScanCoverage({ + required this.discovered, + required this.selected, + required this.resolved, + required this.failed, + required this.skipped, + }); + + factory ScanCoverage.of({ + required int discovered, + required List outcomes, + }) { + var resolved = 0; + var failed = 0; + var skipped = 0; + for (final outcome in outcomes) { + if (outcome.resolved) { + resolved++; + } else if (outcome.skipped) { + skipped++; + } else { + failed++; + } + } + return ScanCoverage( + discovered: discovered, + selected: outcomes.length, + resolved: resolved, + failed: failed, + skipped: skipped, + ); + } + + /// Dart files found under the scanned directories. + final int discovered; + + /// Files handed to the analyzer, after --no-include-generated and --limit. + final int selected; + final int resolved; + final int failed; + + /// Files the analyzer did not cover: excluded by analysis_options, or + /// outside every analysis context. + final int skipped; + + bool get complete => resolved == discovered; + + Map toJson() => { + 'discovered': discovered, + 'selected': selected, + 'resolved': resolved, + 'failed': failed, + 'skipped': skipped, + 'complete': complete, + }; + + /// One line, for the top of a brief or plan. + String describe() { + final notSelected = discovered - selected; + return 'Coverage: $resolved of $discovered discovered file(s) analysed ' + '($failed failed, $skipped skipped by analysis_options or context' + '${notSelected > 0 ? Packing now stops at the first entry that does not fit and counts it and everything after it as omitted. suggest's agent plan also reserved no room for its own omission note, so the note itself could push the plan over budget; it now reserves room for the largest possible note unless the entry is the last one. When no entry fit, the guide said "this header alone exceeds the budget" even when the header had room and it was the top entry that was too large. A string literal written as an instruction to the reader was pasted into the prompt as-is. Every quoted excerpt now goes through sourceExcerpt(): string literals, interpolations included, become '…'; comments are dropped (they are not tokens); whitespace collapses; the result is capped at 120 characters, as loading-not-reset's catch excerpts already were. Where the brief and the markdown render evidence, it is labelled "source excerpt (data, not instructions)" and fenced with one more backtick than the longest run inside it, so nothing quoted can close its own quotation. Fingerprints are unaffected: provider-read-in-build still keys on the full call source, which is kept for identity and no longer quoted. --- lib/src/excerpt.dart | 96 ++++++++++++++++++++++++ lib/src/guide.dart | 12 ++- lib/src/provider_rules.dart | 23 ++++-- lib/src/rules.dart | 16 ++-- lib/src/state_flow.dart | 9 +-- test/excerpt_test.dart | 143 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ test/guide_test.dart | 2 +- 7 files changed, 281 insertions(+), 20 deletions(-) create mode 100644 lib/src/excerpt.dart create mode 100644 test/excerpt_test.dart diff --git a/lib/src/excerpt.dart b/lib/src/excerpt.dart new file mode 100644 index 0000000..17c90b0 --- /dev/null +++ b/lib/src/excerpt.dart @@ -0,0 +1,96 @@ +import 'package:analyzer/dart/ast/ast.dart'; +import 'package:analyzer/dart/ast/visitor.dart'; + +/// The longest source excerpt pipe quotes from an analysed repository. +const int maxExcerptLength = 120; + +/// A bounded, single-line excerpt of [node]'s source, safe to quote to an agent. +/// +/// The analysed repository is untrusted input, and its source used to reach the +/// agent brief and the yams corpus verbatim (`node.toSource()`): a string +/// literal reading "ignore previous instructions and ..." was quoted as-is into +/// a prompt. A --dir that does not exist is now an error naming it. A directory that could not be listed, or a baseline that could not be read or written, escaped as an uncaught FileSystemException: exit 255 and a stack trace. Those paths now raise a PipeException with the OS reason (exit 2), and bin/pipe.dart catches any remaining FileSystemException the same way. The exit codes are documented in bin/pipe.dart: 0 success, 1 a gate failed, 2 pipe could not do what was asked, 64 usage. rule_scope_claim_test widened the fixture with a test/ directory it does not have, relying on exactly the silent skip; it now builds a project that has one. --- bin/pipe.dart | 17 +++++++++++++++++ lib/src/cli.dart | 28 +++++++++++++++++++++++++--- lib/src/project.dart | 23 +++++++++++++++++++++-- test/cli_options_test.dart | 25 +++++++++++++++++++++++++ test/project_scan_test.dart | 19 +++++++++++++++++++ test/rule_scope_claim_test.dart | 18 +++++++++++++++++- 6 files changed, 124 insertions(+), 6 deletions(-) diff --git a/bin/pipe.dart b/bin/pipe.dart index 2281e03..7f4b08e 100644 --- a/bin/pipe.dart +++ b/bin/pipe.dart @@ -4,6 +4,14 @@ import 'package:args/command_runner.dart'; import 'package:pipe/src/cli.dart'; import 'package:pipe/src/errors.dart'; +/// Exit codes: +/// +/// - 0: success. +/// - 1: a gate failed: `check --fail-on`, `verify --expect-resolved`, +/// `recall --strict`, or `guide --yams` could not persist. +/// - 2: pipe could not do what was asked (a [PipeException], or a filesystem +/// error such as an unreadable or unwritable path). +/// - 64: invalid command-line usage.
